Widescreen in premiere?

I am studying at Uni and my tutors are little help. I have shot on mini-dv in 16:9 aspect ratio. When i imported it to premiere it stretched the image so i went to 'clip' and then 'video' and 'maintein aspect ratio'. When i played it out to the external monitor it was in wide screen again, problem solved. Or so i thought. When i now add any sort of effect and rendering it stretches the images again. Does anyone know why? please help me.

No specific advice other than when all else fails, hunt peck and keep accurate written notes. So when you do find the answer you can look back and know what you did step by step. Do not get in a hurry or you will, like me, forget to write down the crucial part and be lost once again.
It is an ugly and time consuming process unless you go into it with the feel of discovery.

It shouldn't stretch the video when you export. I can't explain why, but you can fix it. Select the clip, go to video/motion and you can squeeze the clip back to the original size. Fill the background color with black. This is the easy fix it, but it will not be the exact 16:9 ration that you started with.
